Bathurst Gaol Scale Model
Bathurst Gaol came to national prominence during the 1970s as a result of inmate protests over a range of issues. After the first uprising in October 1970, officers retaliated with the beatings and other forms of punishment that became known as the “Bathurst Batterings”. When inmate concerns weren’t addressed, larger, more violent riots broke out in February 1974, with prisoners throwing petrol bombs and sparking a fire that gutted the building. Detective Sergeant 3rd Class Edward Kelly of the Scientific Investigation Section of the NSW Police Force constructed this 2.13 x 1.83 metre scale model to illustrate to the Royal Commission the areas destroyed during the uprising.
It is on display at the Corrective Services NSW Museum.
