Gadigal Nawi (indigenous canoe)
A replica indigenous nawi tied bark canoe built from a single sheet of white stringy bark with branch supports and fibre ties sourced from the Batemans Bay area. Construction of the vessel was supervised by teacher-turned-canoe-maker James Dodd to feature in the Mari Nawi Aboriginal Odyssey 2012 exhibition at the State Library of NSW. Typical of watercraft used by the Gadigal people of southern Sydney, similar canoes were used right along the NSW south east coast.
Along with an audio visual presentation of its construction, courtesy of the Batemans Bay Land Council, the nawi is on display at the Batemans Bay Old Court House Museum.
