Kosciuszko Chalet Chairlift Seat

The Kosciuszko Chalet chair lift was built between 1963 and 1964 to link the Alpine Way with Charlotte Pass. Reportedly costing £150,000, it consisted of 50 towers and 38 stations stretching over 5.5 kilometres. Advertised as the longest in the world, it was in reality two separate lifts, both terminating at a central restaurant at the top of Ramshead Range. However, the second lift to Charlotte Pass rarely operated because of high wind and snow banking up on towers. Unfortunately, the 1964 season was the worst on record, and although the chair continued to run into the winter of 1965, the Kosciuszko Chalet went into receivership. When the new owners found the lift unviable, it was closed down and dismantled.

This partially restored chairlift seat is on display at Thredbo Ski Museum.
