Thomas Sutcliffe Mort Medallion

Medallion awarded to Thomas Sutcliffe Mort for maize at the 1866 / 67 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. Mort was an Australian industrialist, auctioneer, wool broker, businessman, merchant and ship owner renowned for speculating in the far south coast pastoral industry. Closely linked with Bodalla, he was interested in the development of refrigeration to improve access to the Sydney markets for the output from his estate. He established the world’s first freezing works at Darling Harbour in 1861.
